Dr.D.José Luis Mateo Álvarez is a distinguished Spanish bassoonist born in Puertollano, Ciudad Real. He studied at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Córdoba and the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, specializing in bassoon, piano, chamber music, harmony, and counterpoint. His career includes being a member of the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España and serving as Bassoon Soloist with the Orquesta Sinfónica “Ciudad de Valladolid – Castilla y León.” He has collaborated with numerous orchestras and performed in prestigious venues across Europe, America, and Asia. From 1992 to 2018, he was the Bassoon Soloist with the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid. Mateo Álvarez has also founded a chamber music group, established a company specializing in bassoon reeds, and published a collection of 19th-century bassoon and piano music. He has been a professor of bassoon at various conservatories and holds a doctorate in music.

 

 

JOSÉ LUIS MATEO ÁLVAREZ
Bassoonist
Born in Puertollano (Ciudad Real), Spain. He began his musical studies at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Córdoba, later transferring to the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, where he studied with D. Vicente Merenciano Silvestre (Soloist of the Orquesta de Radio Televisión Española). He completed his musical training with specialties in Piano, Chamber Music, Harmony, and Counterpoint.
From his training until 1984, he was a member of the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (J.O.N.D.E.). In 1984, he won, through competition, the position of Bassoon Soloist with the Orquesta Sinfónica “Ciudad de Valladolid – Castilla y León,” a role he combined with teaching at the Conservatorio Municipal de Burgos.
He has furthered his bassoon studies with professors such as Erik Hollis, Robert Porter, Ovidio Danzi, Vincenzo Menghini, Klaus Thunemann, Sergio Azollini, Marco Postinghel, and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Milan Turkovic.
He has collaborated with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Valles, Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias, Orquesta Sinfónica de Palma de Mallorca, and the Orquesta Sinfónica de R.T.V.E.
From 1992 to 2018, he was the Bassoon Soloist of the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, performing in venues such as:

He has worked with internationally renowned conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Juanjo Mena, Antoni Ros Marbá, Jesús López Cobos, Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez, Miguel Roa, and Frühbeck de Burgos. He has performed with soloists such as tenor Plácido Domingo, sopranos Montserrat Caballé and Ainhoa Arteta, oboist Hansjörg Schellenberger, guitarists José María Gallardo and Pablo Sáinz Villegas, and pianist Joaquín Achúcarro, among others.

In 1992, he founded the chamber music group Trio D’anches de Madrid (Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon), with which he has performed in venues such as the Instituto Cervantes in Warsaw, Teatro Carlos III in El Escorial, Teatros del Canal in Madrid, and the Auditorio de la Fundación Juan March in Madrid, recording for Radio Nacional de España.
As an entrepreneur, in 2002 he founded the company Siete Notas Musicales S.L., with the website www.sietenotas.es, dedicated to research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) in the manufacture of bassoon reeds. In 2018, he established the commercial name for the bassoon reeds as “Mateo Reeds,” with the website www.mateoreeds.com.
As a publisher, in 2018 he began publishing a collection of scores under the title “Música para fagot y piano del siglo XIX, compuesta en el entorno del Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid.”
From 1990 to 2023, he was a tenured professor of Bassoon at the Conservatorio Profesional de Música “Teresa Berganza” in Madrid. Currently, he is a Bassoon Professor at the Escuela Superior de Música, Forum Musikae in Madrid.
